Richman was selected from a shortlist of art and architecture candidates to fulfil a brief to bring visual coherence to the site, to create an uplifting aesthetic which would relieve the gloom of the underpass and at the same time act as a routemarker for people alighting at the station.
Richman's varied career began with projected light shows in the 1960's for bands such as Free, Spookytooth and The Velvet Underground. He has been using light in his artworks since 1985, creating domestic scale pieces, public sculpture and site specific works in collaboration with architects. Recent commissions and collaborations include The Women's Library in Whitechapel, ten Millennium Beacons for Bristol City Centre, The Tyseley Energy from Waste Facility in Birmingham and Jubilee School in Tulse Hill with AHMM architects.
